When did you take your CELTA? I took my CELTA at BSC York in August 2017
What are you currently doing? I am teaching at BSC York, teaching adults and Young Learners and also doing private tutoring.
Why did you choose to do CELTA at BSC York? I live in York so the location was ideal for me. I googled CELTA in York and was attracted by the size of the centre and positive on-line reviews.
What was your CELTA experience like? I loved it. It was very demanding and very intense but I knew that it would be and had been warned. I feel that it was the best decision I have made. The preparation before the course was really good and the pre-course task was very useful even though I didn’t have time to complete it all. Pete and Sarah our tutors were so helpful and calm and they consistently modelled the techniques for us. It was obvious that they were experienced teachers themselves and were teaching regularly. The course was really well structured and the feedback was really helpful and informative. The course really awakened my love of teaching and when it finished I felt tired but also elated. The trainees on my course got on well and have kept in touch since with a ‘Whats App’ group which we started while on CELTA.
What have you done since you completed the course? I have had a variety of teaching in different language schools in York. I have taught Young Learner Italian groups as well as adults. I have also been teaching some private classes and some evening classes. I have found that the techniques I learnt have come together like a jigsaw now that I have had some more practical experience. The CELTA methods really work no matter what group you are teaching.
Do you have any tips about doing the CELTA?
Look very carefully at the timetable you get before the course starts so you know what is going to happen. Use time before the course to prepare as much as you can.
Make sure you stick to the deadlines.
Be prepared to unlearn techniques you knew before as a teacher
Keep a careful tally of the methods you saw.
