Davide D’ignazio first came to the UK in 2015 hoping to gain international experience as a chef. But in order to reach his goals, he needed to improve his English.
He decided to do a two-week intensive English course with BSC London in order to get the English skills he needed to find work in the UK. Five years later and he’s working as the Head Chef of the Mercante restaurant at the Sheraton Hotel in Mayfair. Read his story…
"English allows me to build better relationships with my colleagues. When I’m having meetings and when I’m developing new recipes English is essential to my work."
What brought you to the UK?
Before I came to the UK, I started to apply for jobs as a chef in Dubai. Although they liked my experience, one restaurant decided not to hire me because I didn’t have any experience working in London. Restaurants in London are really busy and have a really high standard of organisation. If you can work in a restaurant in London you can work at any restaurant in the world.
After this, I came to London for a holiday and it confirmed that this was the right place for me to develop my career. I decided to start an English language course at BSC London.
How did your English course help you reach your goals?
I did a two-week intensive course, which really helped me improve my English and learn to use it professionally. The teachers not only helped us with grammar but also with tips for our day to day lives. They helped us learn more about the city and how to get around.
How does English help you in your day-to-day life?
At work, my English helps me communicate better with my team. It's a very multicultural workplace here and English allows me to build better relationships with my colleagues. When I’m having meetings and when I’m developing new recipes English is essential to my work.
What do you like about living in London?
I love that here in London, I can showcase Italian recipes, bringing Italian cuisine to the people of London.
