BSC is providing an opportunity for colleagues from across our business to be part of Lead5050, a leading organisation empowering women in education.
We’re speaking to members of the BSC team about why joining Lead 5050 is so important to them. Today we asked Carly Young, our Head of Direct Sales, why joining the organisation was important to her.
What made you want to join Lead 5050?
I decided to become a member of Lead5050 because raising the profile of women, in any industry, is extremely important to me. Empowering my colleagues and employees has always been very important to me. What gets me up in the morning is knowing that I have a team of people who expect me to lead the way, support them, and help them to see that there is a potential successful career pathway for everyone… especially if you just keep your eyes and ears open, learn from those around you and give it all you have. I have led various teams to success within sales and operations in the education sector, and thrive off mentoring and developing others professionally.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on so far at BSC?
An easy question for me really – when I started with BSC 2 years ago, the Directs team was a brand new project… just myself and Jiro Leal, an email inbox, and a few new customers on Livechat. From that day, I was given the task to recruit and train brand new, shiny Sales Executives to join the team and drive this side of the business forward! Seeing a brand new department soar and grow as quickly as ours has, and starting it from scratch, has been incredibly rewarding.
What do you most enjoy about working at BSC?
The people, by far, are what make my day so enjoyable. I have an incredible team who work extremely hard to better themselves and the drive the department forward… whilst having fun at the same time! A positive work environment is very important to me and working in the heart of the school, surrounded by so many different teams make the day to day much more enjoyable.
What drives you in your career?
I am at my happiest at work when I walk out of the office thinking ‘I genuinely helped that person today’. In my role, the development of people and being a strong role model is paramount and giving feedback all part of it. If I can leave the day knowing that my team are happy and feel like they have learnt something new, then I know I have done a good job.
Is there a particular woman in business that inspires you?
Now for those of you who know me, you will know how much I love nothing more than a cosy night in my home that I am very proud to call my own. A particular woman, ‘Mrs Hinch’, as she is dearly known, has become a social media sensation in a matter of months for her incredible housekeeping and cleaning top tips. Coming home to a happy home after a busy day at work keeps me sane… and Mrs Hinch constantly gives me ideas of how to be proud of what is yours. She has inspired hundreds of thousands of us to look after what we have… and also keeps us laughing every day!
What innovations do you see in the future for BSC?
We all say it, but it’s extremely important we differentiate ourselves from our competitors. To be the best, to be the biggest, we need to set ourselves apart from all the others doing what we do. I feel privileged to be part of a company who is so daring, not scared to take risks and who will push the boundaries of the industry further and further.
