Great Things: Stefan’s Success Story

A view of the city of London with a Great Things Start Here overlay

As part of our “Great Things” series, we interviewed Stefan, a former BSC  student whose English language skills led him to study a Masters in Computational Finance at UCL. After graduating, he then went on to secure a job at Bloomberg’s European headquarters in London.

Stefan’s BSC Success Story

Which course did you do with BSC and when?

I was enrolled in the Business English language course at British Study Centres London.

What made you choose to come and study in the UK?

After completing my A-levels in Austria I thought it was time to broaden my cultural horizon, and I thought there is no better place than London, as it is the most global and international city and potentially in the world.

Could you tell us a bit about your time at BSC?

I immediately realised how warm I was welcomed, I was picked up from the airport and driven to my accommodation. I was 18 at the time and it was the first time I’ve been traveling on my own, as you can imagine it was a big step for me which I will never regret. I immediately made friends with people from Sweden, Kuwait, Germany, Italy, Japan, Venezuela, Argentina and Spain.

What do you do now?

After completing my bachelors in Austria I decided to pursue a masters in Computational Finance at UCL in London. Now I work for Bloomberg‘s European headquarters here in London.

How did your course help you get there?

In Finance, speaking English is a precondition to be employed, and being trained by professionals definitely is a big difference to the typical English you get taught at home. Not only did this help me to improve my English in general, but it also allowed me to experience the culture and lifestyle in London which cannot be taught in a classroom environment.

Do you think having English language skills has helped you in your career?

Certainly. English is the spoken and written language in finance. Working with portfolio managers, traders and other key players of the financial industry requires a good and proficient understanding of the English language in order to get the job done.

Would you recommend BSC?

If you are committed and open for something new, I can only recommend BSC. You will study along highly motivated and inspiring individuals who come from all across the globe and this will certainly be an experience of a lifetime for you.
