Hi! I’m Joe, the social organiser in Bournemouth. I have been working for BSC now for just over 6 months and in that time I have been fortunate enough to have visited some the most beautiful countries in the world but nothing can compare to where I have recently just been…Singapore and Indonesia.
I wanted to go to Singapore because the English influence and language is still very evident there after colonial rule was in place from 1819 to 1963. Singapore was a crucial island for us during World War 2 and still has that sense of British heritage. Singapore has the lowest crime rate in the world and is also the one of the cleanest countries too. One of the nicest features of Singapore is their own version of the London Eye and the Merlion Lion. My time in Singapore was spent visiting English schools and getting some general knowledge through meeting the locals. Still many English families live there because of the climate, job opportunities and general way of life!
My next stop was Bali which is one of the Indonesian islands. Bali is classed as a third world country and from the minute you step out of the airport terminal you can see why. I spent 10 days on the islands of Bali, Gili T. and Lombok. I wanted to find out what it is really like to live and work here and how the English language is so important to them due to Bali’s reliance on tourism. As Australia is so close, this makes a perfect destination for thousands of tourists each year! Indonesian people are the warmest, most welcoming people I have ever had the chance of meeting. Ninety percent of them live in huts made out of bamboo, wash in rivers and still are very happy with that life. I had the chance to meet an amazing family that run a shop selling dresses known as ‘Kains’. Whilst I was in Bali I managed to take BSC merchandise to give to the local people as a gesture of taking care of me and I have never seen people as grateful to receive something as much as they were. Sometimes we forget how truly lucky we are!!!
