5 Best Bars and Pubs in West Hampstead, London

West Hampstead is a popular and affluent area of North London, part of the Borough of Camden. Suburban residential streets lead off its main road, West End Lane, which has a relaxed café, pub and restaurant culture. It feels very much like a small leafy village in its own right, whilst at the same time it is situated less than 15 minutes away from the bustling and cosmopolitan hub of central London by tube, giving you the best of both worlds!

If you want to experience ‘local’ London, here are our 5 top bar and pub recommendations in West Hampstead, located within easy reach of our London-based school, Hampstead School of English:

1. The Gallery, Broadhurst Gardens

Distance from Hampstead School of English: 15 minutes’ walk

The Gallery is a delightful bar and restaurant located only 2 minutes away from West Hampstead tube station. With ambient lighting, exposed brick walls and a small wooden raised gallery that looks out over the room, it feels cosy and atmospheric and is the perfect place to hang out with friends on winter nights!

Shelves on the walls are filled with books, and there are even board games available for you to play whilst enjoying a cocktail!

2. The Railway, West End Lane

If you’re looking for a typical British pub, The Railway is the perfect embodiment. Located just opposite The Gallery (Pub No. 1), it offers good value pub meals and is run by a team of relaxed and friendly staff. It has plenty of space and several large tables that are great for groups.

It also has a pool table and live sport screens if you are looking for somewhere to watch the big matches, including football, rugby and cricket.

3. The Black Lion, West End Lane

If you feel like something a bit more upmarket, The Black Lion is more of a bistro than a pub, with a chic interior and outdoor patio so you can enjoy a beer on hazy summer nights!  It offers traditional Sunday roasts and a mix of international and local beers and wines.

It is also good for groups, with several large booth tables inside and picnic benches outside.
