With World Cup fever close to getting underway, and England having qualified for the World Cup this time, the social programme made a trip to the “home of football”, Wembley Stadium.
The stadium is the home of the England national football team, and was opened in 2007, replacing the old Wembley Stadium. The old Wembley Stadium, which became known as “the home of football” was one of the world’s most famous football stadiums until its demolition in 2003. Today’s Wembley is the second largest stadium in Europe. It has also held large concerts by artists such as Oasis, Metallica and U2, as well as hosting Live Earth.
The BSC London social programme took in the Wembley Stadium Tour which includes all the areas you wouldn’t normally see on match day. You can really sense the history in the England changing room, and you can experience the tension the players would feel in the players’ tunnel. The highlights of the tour are definitely walking up the Trophy Winners steps where you can raise a replica of the FA Cup, and sitting in the manager’s seat beside the touchline!
When you are in London it is definitely worth a visit. You can get there from British Study Centres in London by taking the Jubilee line from Baker Street to Wembley Park, and it takes only 15 minutes’.
