Accommodation

Most people studying English in the UK will have accommodation given to them by their school, but what if you’re here for a long period or just want to find your own? There are many ways to find accommodation, including advertisements on notice boards in the school, local newspapers and internet sites. Two popular sites are www.craigslist.com and www.gumtree.com for London. You can also place an advertisement on your school’s notice board if you are looking for a room. Reception staff are usually very helpful, and if you ask them about rooms they will be able to tell you companies that offer rooms and flats just for students!

Calling cards

Calling cards are a popular way to call foreign countries cheaply, and they can be bought almost everywhere, from newsagents to off licences and convenience stores. Another way of calling is using Skype to call phones and mobiles. You can buy a subscription that allows you to call for one month for a set price, or you can pay per minute. Quite often the per minute price is less than a calling card charges.

Medicine

You can buy medicine from a pharmacy or a chemist, or also a large supermarket. Large supermarkets and chain chemists such as Boots offer the best prices, but a chemist can be found in most areas with a few shops.

Doctors and health

In an emergency phone 999, otherwise call 0800 22 44 88 to find your closest doctor or hospital. If the telephone line is closed call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24 to speak to a nurse or doctor. For minor problems such as a common cold you can speak to a pharmacist in a chemist such as Boots or Superdrug.

Entertainment

While in England, take advantage of the wide choice of English language films, books and music available. The major high street music and video shop is HMV, and the major book shop is Waterstones.
