Oxford English School Social Activities – ‘A Night At The Dogs’

Bookmark and Share

When coming to study English in the UK, getting to know the British culture is something that happens automatically. But unless you’re here for a while you may only ’scratch the surface’, or in other words, see only a little part of it. For that reason the English schools at London, Oxford and Brighton run social activities that include things to do with British culture, showing you things you might not experience if you were just here on holiday. For example, who would’ve thought that dog racing is the second most popular sport to go and watch in the UK? While Spain is well known for bull fighting, and Italy is famous for the Palio di Siena many visitors to the UK will not know about dog racing. It is surprisingly popular in British life, and in fact in America, Australia and South Africa.

I usually go to watch the dog races because the outside area of the stadium has a brilliant atmosphere. You can always pick out the owners shouting and screaming their dogs to the final line. This makes betting more exciting. But there is the disadvantage that betting can be addictive. Drinking a couple of drinks and betting makes the night unforgettable, especially when you win. For me I am not good at betting nor would I say I am a lucky person so I prefer the taking photos :) Here are some photos for you- I hope you enjoy them!!!
